Serious, pale-eyed, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally seduced. Phil’s romance, strength and vulnerability are trapped in the past and in the land: he can castrate a bull calf with two quick stab wounds; he swims naked in the river and smears his body with mud. He’s a cowboy as raw as his skin. The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy farmers in Montana. Phil behaves so cruelly that he moves them both to tears, relishes their injury and makes his tie mates laugh – all except his brother George, who comforts Rose and then returns to marry her. As Phil oscillates between rage and cunning, his mockery of Rose takes on a hideous form—he hovers at the edge of her field of vision, whistling a melody she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more open, heightened by the cheers of Phil’s cowherd apprentices. Then Phil seems to take the boy under his wing.
