James Supa Medrano, one of San Antonio’s growing contemporary artists and owner of F L A T L I N E S Gallery, recently launched his first Kickstarter campaign with the help of fellow 1906 Studio mainstay and Kickstarter veteran, Swordfish Islands’ Jacob Hurst. Launched on December 16th, the crowdfunding campaign will help fund Medrano’s 2021 #SELFIES calendar featuring contemporary pop art portraits of musical icons.
This pop-star-studded pop-art calendar is currently only available by supporting the campaign on Kickstarter, and you still have time to get in on the goods.
Medrano was born and raised in the westside, where his childhood talent for art led to serious recognition as a graffiti artist. Today, his work is featured in multiple San Antonio Street Art Initiative collaborations including the column murals under I-35 at N. St. Mary’s St. and Elmira, and the mural room at Hopscotch.
In 2019, Medrano began painting 12″x 9″ portraits to celebrate his favorite artists and musicians. The works offered new, creative ways to experiment with darker color palettes while incorporating his signature style.
“My goal for these paintings was to take a portrait and make it my own by combining grayscale and a hint of reference color that speaks to each icon,” says Medrano. Hurst suggested turning the portraits into a wall calendar and after a careful curation process, David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, Sade, Robert Smith, Morrissey, Prince, Debbie Harry, Madonna, Billy Idol, David Byrne, Björk, and Ozzy Osbourne were chosen to complete the 12-month calendar.
Also available through the Kickstarter support levels is a high-quality, vinyl sticker pack featuring Medrano’s #SELFIE portraits of Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Uncoated paper will be used for the interior calendar pages so backers can easily make notes on their 2021 calendar. The print run is limited to Kickstarter backers only and offers a rare opportunity for independent art lovers to get their hands on Medrano’s coveted work at an accessible price point— great for last minute Christmas presents that won’t require a trip to the store or shipping.
By supporting the project, backers will also take part in Kickstarter’s LIGHTS ON initiative designed to help sustain studio spaces and mitigate the sustained losses of the art community due to the pandemic.
“James and I both have hybrid studio/gallery spaces in San Antonio’s amazing 1906 Studio in the Southtown Arts District. During normal years, 1906 hosts a monthly Second Saturday art walk, but 2020 has been anything but normal! Covid-19 caused the art walks to be cancelled for the first time in 25 years, and the conventions I normally attend like PAX South and Gen Con were cancelled as well. News of the vaccine is making us hopeful, but as cases continue to spike in South Texas, we know it will be a long time before our revenue streams are back to normal,” says Hurst.
So far, the Kickstarter campaign offers 6 levels of support to patrons:
· $10 or more – sticker pack only: three (3) 4”x6” high-quality vinyl stickers featuring Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat
· $15 or more – a bundle of Role-Playing Games (RPGs) created by Jacob Hurst: The Dark of Hot Springs Island, A Field Guide to Hot Springs Island, The Tomb of Black Sand, and the Worldbuilder’s Notebook.
· $20 or more – #selfies 2021 calendar & one vinyl sticker pack
· $25 or more – #selfies calendar & two vinyl sticker packs
· $35 or more – two (2) #selfie calendars & two (2) vinyl sticker packs
There’s one final level available for a single supporter generous enough to gift $400: an original 12″x9″ Ozzy portrait, listed as acrylic on wood panel with a satin varnish.
